CLINICAL STAFF
A/Prof Michael Boyer is Head, Medical Oncology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He had trained there as well as at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. His research interests include the cellular metabolism of tumors and new drugs. He has a particular clinical interest in lung cancer, genitourinary cancers, and upper gastrointestinal cancers.
A/Prof Stephen Clarke trained in Sydney as a medical oncologist and then joined the Institute of Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital. His work included drug development and the optimization of drug effects and toxicity through pharmaology. Since returning to Australia he has developed a cancer pharmacology group and early phase drug trials, and clinical interest in colorectal, head and neck, and lung cancers.
Dr Anne Hamilton is Head of Clinical Research at the Sydney Cancer Centre. She trained in Melbourne, then at the EORTC and Institute Jules Bordot (Belgium) followed by a fellowship in New York University Hospital. Her interests are clinical trials, and management of breast/ ovarian cancer.
Dr Philip Beale is Head, Medical Oncology at Concord Hospital. He trained in medical oncology in Sydney before undertaking research at the Institute of Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital into cytotoxic drug resistance and also participated in early drug development trials. His main interests include platinum resistance, new agents, and clinical management of gynaecological malignancies, sarcomas, and gastrointestinal cancers.
Dr Jane Beith trained as a medical oncologist in Sydney before pursuing postgraduate studies at University College Hospital, London. Her areas of interest include modulation of enzymes to increase cytotoxicity of alkylating agents in brain tumours, and early phase drug development. She has a particular clinical interest in breast, gynaecological, and CNS cancers.
CANCER RESEARCH
The Sydney Cancer Centre has laboratories devoted to gene therapy, DNA methylation, drug resistance, immunobiology of myeloma, cancer metastasis, and skin carcinogenesis.
GENE THERAPY
Dr John Rasko joined the Sydney Cancer Centre as Head of the Gene Therapy program. He trained in haematology in Sydney and Melbourne before under- taking postdoctoral work at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Centre, Seattle. His main interests include retroviral vectors, animal models of gene transduction, and clinical applications of gene therapy.
CLINICAL TRIALS METHODOLOGY
A/Prof John Simes is the Director of the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre at the University of Sydney with expertise in trial methodology and biostatistics. He trained at the University of Sydney and the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston. His large group has designed and run large scale clinical trials in cancer and cardio-vascular disease in Australia over the last 10 years.
