Department of Medical Oncology

Dr Eng-Huat Tan, Senior Consultant in the Department of Medical Oncology and Deputy Director of the Division of Clinical Trials and Epidemiological Sciences did his fellowship in head and neck, and thoracic oncology at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Clinic and heads the head and neck/thoracic oncology research programme in the department.

Dr Miriam Tao, Senior Consultant did her fellowship at the Stanford University, United States and currently heads the lymphoma and bone marrow transplant programme in the department.

Dr Lay-Tin Soh, Senior Consultant, was trained at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre, United States and currently heads the gynecological and genitourinary oncology program in the Department.

Dr Wen-Hsin Koo, Senior Consultant, and Medical Director of Dover Park Hospice did his fellowship in gastrointestinal oncology at the Mayo Clinic and heads the GI oncology research program in the department.

Dr Han-Chong Toh, Senior Consultant & Deputy Head in the Department of Medical Oncology, was trained in bone marrow transplant at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre and laboratory research at the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, United States, currently runs the National Cancer Centre's Cell Therapy Program and Cryopreservation Laboratory.

Dr Simon Ong, Sernior Consultant, received his training in clinical pharmacology at the University of Sydney and directs the phase I and clinical pharmacology program in the department.

Dr Zee-Wan Wong, Senior Consultant, completed her breast oncology fellowship at Duke University Medical Centre and was subsequently a research fellow at the Washington University in St Louis till 2003. She is currently actively involved in serveral multi-centre trials and also investigator-initiated studies in breast cancer.

Dr Darren Lim, Consultant, did his fellowship in thoracic oncology and pharmacogenomics in Washington University in St Louis, USA and is actively involved in early phase clinical studies.

Dr Nan-Soon Wong, Consultant, completed his fellowship in Breast Oncology at Sunnybrook and Women's Health Science Centre, University of Toronto in 2005. His research and clinical interests include neoadjuvant and noval therapeutics in breast cancer.

Dr Su-Pin Choo, Consultant, did her medical degree at University of Nottingham, UK and fellowship at UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Centre and has special interest in hepatocellular carcinoma and gastrointestinal cancers.

Department of Therapeutic Radiology

Dr Eu-Tiong Chua, Senior Consultant, received his training at the Middlesex Hospital, United Kingdom and his main focus is on breast oncology.

Dr Joseph Wee, Director of the Division of Clinical Trials and Epidemiological Sciences, is also a Senior Consultant in the Department of Therapeutic Radiology. He was trained at the Middlesex Hospital, United Kingdom and his area of interest includes head and neck, thoracic and upper GI oncology. 

Dr Kam-Weng Fong, Senior Consultant, was trained at Royal Marsden Hospital, United Kingdom and his areas of interests include cancer informatics, head and neck and thoracic oncology. 

Dr Terence Tan, Consultant, was trained at the Mount Vernon Hospital, United Kingdom and his main areas of interest include head and neck and genitourinary oncology.

Dr Susan Loong, Consultant, received her clinical training at the Royal Marsden Hospital and her basic research training in Edinburg. Her areas of interest include lymphoma and breast oncology and basic research.

A/Prof Balram Chowbay is a pharmacist by training and is now a research fellow with the clinical pharmacology laboratory. He is currently pursuing his PhD. His interest is in Pharmacokinetics/ Pharmacodynamics of anti-cancer agents as well as Pharmacogenetics of drug metabolising enzymes and drug transporters.

CLINICAL STAFF

Prof John Eu-Li Wong, Director of The Cancer Institute, did his residency and fellowship at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Centre and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre. He was the CALGB protocol fellow and Chief Resident, Internal Medicine, while at Cornell. In 1992 he returned to his native Singapore to assume the position of Head, Department of Medical Oncology, at the National University Hospital. He was instrumental in developing a state-of-art Medical Oncology programme at the National University Hospital, where a major focus is conducting clinical trials designed to meet the stringent audit process required for peer-review presentation. His research interests are focused on exploring the differences in biology between Asian and Western cancers, and exploring new therapeutic options in cancers unique to South-East Asia.

Dr Robert Lim , Chief of Department of Haemotology-Onocology, did his residency and fellowship at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Centre and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre. His research interests are with the gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers.

Dr Boon-Cher Goh, Director of Research, Department of Haematology-Oncology, received his fellowship training in clinical pharmacology at the University of Chicago. His research interests are in phase I studies and pharmacogenetics and he currently directs these programs in the department.

Dr Siew-Eng Lim , Senior Consultant, did her residency in Philadelphia and fellow-ship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, Harvard Medical School. She has a strong interest in breast and gynaecological cancer trials and is actively involved in the development and running of these trials.

Dr Soo-Chin Lee completed a fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and is currently directing the cancer genetics programme at the National University Hospital. She is specialize in breast cancer.

Dr Ross Soo ,Senior Consultant, did his residency in Melbourne,Australia and fellow-ship in Melbourne and Sydney. His current interests are with the clinical trials in head and neck, and lung cancers.

Dr Alvin Wong ,Consultant, did his residency in medical oncology at National university Hospital and fellowship in EBV-related malignancies at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore. His special interests are in urologic malignancies, tumor immunology and Asian lung cancer.

Dr Wei-Peng Yong, Consultant, did his fellowship at the University of Chicago. His interests are early phase clinical trial and gastrointestinal cancers.

A/Prof Wee-Joo Chng, Consultant, did his residency in Internal Medicine in York, United Kingdom and fellowship in Haematology at the National University Hospital, Singapore. He subsequently completed a post-doctoral research fellowship on Multiple Myeloma Genomics at the Mayo Clinic, USA. His current research interest is in genomics and experimental therapeutics in haematological malignancies and directs the research in haematological malignancies.

Dr Tan-Min Chin, Consultant, received her general oncology training at National University Hospital and went on to complete a fellowship in thoracic oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Her interests are primarily in lung cancers, especially that occurring in non-smokers. She has ongoing translational and clinical studies, specially designed for this group of patients.

Dr Sing-Huang Tan, Consultant, did her oncology training at National University Hospital, in addition to a fellowship at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore. She has a strong interest in breast cancer trials, and also in research involving epigenetics in various tumor types.

CLINICAL STAFF

A/Prof Michael Boyer is Head, Medical Oncology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He had trained there as well as at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. His research interests include the cellular metabolism of tumors and new drugs. He has a particular clinical interest in lung cancer, genitourinary cancers, and upper gastrointestinal cancers.

A/Prof Stephen Clarke trained in Sydney as a medical oncologist and then joined the Institute of Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital. His work included drug development and the optimization of drug effects and toxicity through pharmaology. Since returning to Australia he has developed a cancer pharmacology group and early phase drug trials, and clinical interest in colorectal, head and neck, and lung cancers.

Dr Anne Hamilton is Head of Clinical Research at the Sydney Cancer Centre. She trained in Melbourne, then at the EORTC and Institute Jules Bordot (Belgium) followed by a fellowship in New York University Hospital. Her interests are clinical trials, and management of breast/ ovarian cancer.

Dr Philip Beale is Head, Medical Oncology at Concord Hospital. He trained in medical oncology in Sydney before undertaking research at the Institute of Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital into cytotoxic drug resistance and also participated in early drug development trials. His main interests include platinum resistance, new agents, and clinical management of gynaecological malignancies, sarcomas, and gastrointestinal cancers.

Dr Jane Beith trained as a medical oncologist in Sydney before pursuing postgraduate studies at University College Hospital, London. Her areas of interest include modulation of enzymes to increase cytotoxicity of alkylating agents in brain tumours, and early phase drug development. She has a particular clinical interest in breast, gynaecological, and CNS cancers.

CANCER RESEARCH

The Sydney Cancer Centre has laboratories devoted to gene therapy, DNA methylation, drug resistance, immunobiology of myeloma, cancer metastasis, and skin carcinogenesis.

 

GENE THERAPY

Dr John Rasko joined the Sydney Cancer Centre as Head of the Gene Therapy program. He trained in haematology in Sydney and Melbourne before under- taking postdoctoral work at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Centre, Seattle. His main interests include retroviral vectors, animal models of gene transduction, and clinical applications of gene therapy.

 

CLINICAL TRIALS METHODOLOGY

A/Prof John Simes is the Director of the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre at the University of Sydney with expertise in trial methodology and biostatistics. He trained at the University of Sydney and the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston. His large group has designed and run large scale clinical trials in cancer and cardio-vascular disease in Australia over the last 10 years.

Prof Anthony Chan is Chair Professor, Chairman and Chief of Service of the Department of Clinical Oncology and Director of the Hong Kong Cancer Institute and Sir Y K Pao Centre for Cancer at CUHK. His interests are in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, colorectal cancer and translational studies in NPC and HCC.

Prof Benny Zee is Professor at CUHK and Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Trials Unit (CCTU). He is also Director of Centre for Clinical Trials in CUHK and is holding an adjunct appointment with the Department of Community Health and epidemiology of Queen’s University, Canada. Prof Jae Kyung Roh, Director of Cancer Metastasis Research Centre, did his fellowship at Vincent T. Lombardi Cancer Centre, Georgetown University in Washington DC after residency training in Internal Medicine in Severance Hospital. He returned to Korea in 1986 as chief of division of medical oncology, and conducted clinical trials and cancer pharmacology research. Now he is mainly involved in cancer metastasis research and clinical research as Director.

Prof Sun Young Rha graduated the Yonsei University College of Medicine and received the board of the Internal Medicine and the Ph D degree at the Yonsei University. After getting the subspeciatly board at the Hemato-Oncology, she finished her postdoctoral fellowship at the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, the University of Texas Health Science Centre at San Antonio, TX, USA. Currently, her positions are 1) Associate Professor, Internal Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine, 2) Chief of the Division of Genomics and Translational Research, Cancer Metastasis Research Center, Yonsei University, 3) Head of the Division of Clinical Trial Support, Education and Training, Clinical Trials Center, Yonsei University, and the 4) Director of the Office for the Human Research Protection Program, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University Health System. The fields of her interests are 1) gastric cancer, RCC and Sarcoma, 2) Therapeutic strategy and new drug development, 3) Genomics based biomarker development, 4) Pharmacogenomics/pharmacogenetics, 5) Angiogenesis and metastasis, and 6) Epigenetics. As a clinical researcher, she has been involved in various clinical trials from phase I-III trials, and working as a leading PI in Korean Cancer Study Group. Also as a translational researcher, preclinical anticancer drug screening with potential mechanism evaluation and several correlative studies for biomarker development are on-going. After establishing the genomic core facility, genomics-based biomarker and target identification in GI cancer are the current major projects.

Dr Hei-Cheul Jeung is associated professor of Department of Internal Medicine, Yonsei Cancer Center (YCC), Yonsei University College of Medicine. He trained in medical oncology in YCC from 1999 to 2002, and he worked for Research of Molecular Cancer Medicine of Kagoshima University, Kagoshima, Japan, as a postdoctoral fellow from 2002 to 2004. He is now in Gangnam Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea, where he have been participating in clinical trials and cancer pharmacology research. His main clinical interest is gastrintestinal oncology, and also conducts basic/translational researches about metastasis and angio(lymphangio)genesis.

Prof Sang Joon Shin, Assistant Professor, department of oncology, did his fellowship at Yonsei Cancer Center. His research interests are with the gastrointestinal, brain and skin cancer.

Prof Seung Tae Lee served as a postdoctoral fellow at the M.D.Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Tx. His main interest is B cell neoplasms including lymphoma and myeloma and cancer immunotherapy.

Prof Hye Jin Choi finished her fellowship training in Medical Oncology in Yonsei Cancer Center. She is interested in clinical trial of HCC & pancreatic cancer and therapeutic development of oncolytic virus.

Dr Alex Y Chang, MD is the CEO and Medical Director of Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre (JHSIMC). He holds the concurrent position of Director for Research. Former professor of oncology in medicine at the University of Rochester, New York. Dr Chang has been the principal investigator in more than 80 clinical trials. Before relocating to Singapore to assume his position at Johns Hopkins. Dr Chang has served as the President/Director of Research at the Upstate New York Cancer Research & Education Foundation. Dr Chang has been deeply involved in the development of study protocols for ECOG and URCC and has published over 90 peer reviewed research papers.

Dr Lavina Bharwani is a consultant with Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre (JHSIMC) and holds the concurrent position of Assistant Director for Clinical Education. Prior to joining JHSIMC, she was an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Haematology/Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine in the USA. Dr Bharwani is trained in Internal Medicine as well as Haematology/Oncology at Baylor and is American Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Haematology and Medical Oncology. Her areas of interest include breast cancer, gynaecologic and gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr Gilberto Lopes is a consultant at Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre (JHSIMC). He holds the concurrent position of Assistant Director for Research and has a special interest in thoracic, gastrointestinal and breast malignancies. Prior to joining JHSIMC, he was a Haematology/Oncology fellow with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami. Dr Gilberto Lopes is an active clinical researcher and has authored many scientific papers and abstracts as well as review articles and book chapter on Oncology.

Dr Ann-Lii Cheng, is Professor of Medicine and Chief of Medical Oncology of the National Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. He received his MD degree, PhD degree, and his specialty training in Medical Oncology at the Medical School of the National Taiwan University. In 1990, he was a research fellowat the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. Dr Cheng has been actively involved in basic and translational research in lymphoma, gastric adenocarcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles in these areas. He became "Distinguished Professor" of National Taiwan University in 2006, and was elected as Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2007. In addition, Dr Cheng is chairman of the Chemotherapy Committee of the Taiwan Cooperative Oncology Group, of which he was the one of the founding members.

Dr Chih-Hsin Yang, Chih-Hsin (James) Yang, MD, PhD, is Professor at the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine and the Graduate Institute of Clinical Pharmacy at the College of Medicine, National Taiwan University (NTU), and has been a staff member in the Department of Oncology at the university hospital since 1995. Between 1993 and 1995 he was the clinical associate medical oncologist at the Medicine Branch of National Cancer Institute at Bethesda, Maryland. Dr Yang's research focus is the treatment of lung cancer and the mechanism of multidrug resistance of chemotherapy or targeted therapy. He is the principal investigator of many local and international clinical trials and serves in the steering committee in many international studies on lung cancer. He has published more than 60 papers in international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of multidrug resistance research and lung cancer treatment. He was the invited speaker, organizer in many international symposium and conferences.

A/Prof Kun-Huei Yeh, trained in National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) as a medical oncologist, and earned his PhD doctorate degree at the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, NTU College of Medicine, in 1998. From 1998 to 2000, he worked as an associate scholar at the Department of Genetics, Yale School of Medicine, Connecticut, USA, for basic researches in cancer cell cycle control, and protein ubiquitination of p27 and cyclin E. He has been appointed Department Chief of Internal Medicine, and Deputy Superintendent of far Eastern Memorial Hospital between 2001 and 2006. After returning to NTUH he has helped develop a cancer translational research laboratory, and has particular research interests in gastrointestinal cancers (gastric cancer, gastric MALToma, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, etc).

Dr Chia-Chi (Josh) Lin, MD, PhD, Staff Physician, Department of Oncology, National Taiwan University Hospital, and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Urology, National Taiwan University College of Medicine. He received his MD degree, PhD degree, and his specialty training in Medical Oncology at the National Taiwan University College of Medicine. In 2006 - 2007, he was a clinical research fellow at the Institute for Drug Development, Cancer Therapy and Research Center, San Antonio, TX and Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare, Translational Genomics Research Institute, Scottsdale, AZ, USA. Dr Lin has been actively involved in clinical and translational research in thoracic malignancies (esophageal cancer, lung cancer), genitourinary malignancies (transitional cell carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, prostate cancer), and phase I trials. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and reviews in these areas. Dr Lin is an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Dr Chiun Hsu is a clinical assistant professor and attending physician at the Department of Oncology. His research interest includes clinical and translational research of hepatobiliary cancers.

Dr Chih-Hung Hsu is a clinical assistant professor and attending physician at the Department of Oncology. He received his MD degree and PhD degree at the National Taiwan University College of Medicine, and his specialty training in Medical Oncology at the University Hospital of the same institute. In 2003-2004, he was a research fellow at the Department of Pharmacology, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, USA. His research interest includes clinical and translational research of liver cancer and esophageal cancer.

Dr Yen-Shen Lu is Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University College of Medicine in Taipei, Taiwan. He has been an attending doctor at the Department of Oncology, National Taiwan University Hospital since 2001. Dr Lu gained his medical degree from the Chinese Medical College of Medicine in 1992 and his PhD from the institute of Clinical Medicine, National Taiwan University College of Medicine in 2006. Dr Lu has been actively involved in basic and translational research in hepatocellular carcinoma, and breast cancer. He is co-author of more than 30 peer-reviewed articles. Dr Lu is a member of the Taiwan Society of Internal Medicine, the Chinese Oncology Society and the Breast Cancer Society of Taiwan.

Dr Zhong-Zhe Lin, M.D., is a medical oncologist in National Taiwan University Hospital, and is actively participating in translational and clinical researches of liver, lung, and gastric cancers.

Dr Ying-Chun Shen is a medical oncologist and hamatologist. She is involved in designing and conducting many clinical trials of liver, pancreas and stomach cancers. Her main interest of research is hepatocarcinoma.

Dr Ching-Hung Lin is a medical oncologist and hematologist in National Taiwan University Hospital, and is actively participating in translational and clinical researches of breast cancer and lymphoma.

Dr Yu-Lin Lin is a medical oncologist and attending physician in the Department of Onology, National Taiwan University Hospital. He had been a clinical observer in phase I clinical trial center at Ohio State University (OSU) Medical Center and trained for translational research in the college of pharmacy at OSU for one year. His research interest includes clinical and translational research of lung and colorectal cancer.

Dr Jih-Hsiang Lee, an attending physician, completed his fellowship training in the department of oncology, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan. He currently serves in the National Center of Excellence for Clinical Trial and Research, a project of National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan.

CLINICAL STAFF

Dr Charles Chuah is a Consultant in the Department of Haematology and Assistant Professor, Cancer and Stem Cell Biology Program, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Singapore. Dr Chuah is a clinician scientist with a special interest in translational research in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). His research interests include the understanding the mechanisms of resistance and use of novel small molecules in CML. He is a principal investigator in many multi-centre CML clinical trials.

Dr Daryl Tan is a Consultant with the Department of Haematology and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. Having completed a postdoctoral fellowship to further train in the sub-specialty of lymphoproliferative diseases at Stanford University, USA. Dr Tan now has an active interest in lymphoid malignancies, including lymphoma, multiple myeloma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.
